Punjabi “tadka” in Hindi movies has been a route to success for Bollywood films over the years. 2014, too, had its share of films which not only had a Punjabi touch, but even depicted the region in a beautiful manner. Here we bring you some of the movies of 2014 which had a regional flavor.
Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania
Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar under the banner of Dharma production had a predominant Punjabi flavor. The movie was extensively shot in Ambala, Chandigarh and Delhi.
The film was among the movies that got better opening this year and earned about Rs. 82.44 crore. Apart from having a Punjabi background, the song ‘Saturday Saturday ’originally sung by Indeep Bakshi and was recreated by Sharib – Toshi and popular song “Samjhawa” sung by Arjit Singh, and Sherya Ghosal were added to make it more real.
Highway
The 21st February release had depicted the beauty of nature in the best possible manner. The movie had a Haryanavi touch with the main lead Randeep Hooda, playing a Haryanavi character. The movie was shot in parts of Punjab, Himachal as well as Kashmir.
The movie charmed the audience with its multi-regional approach and was a treat to cinematic lover. The makers successfully added ‘Punjabi flavour’ through song “Pataka Guddi.”The movie released in 700 screens across India collected about 47 crore at the box office.
Haider
Modern adaption of William Shakespeare tragic play ‘Hamlet’, Haider had a Kashmiri flavor. The movie focuses on insurgency-hit Kashmir conflict of 1995. The script was written Vishal Bharwadaj and Basharat Peer and was critically acclaimed.
The makers made sure that it had vernacular touch with Kashmiri words being used in the dialogues. Moreover, shot in different parts of the region; it has lived the spirit of the Valley. The movie was awarded People’s choice Award in the Mondo Genere category in 9th Rome festival this year.
Chaar Sahibzaade
Punjabi movie Chaar Sahibzaade directed by Harry Baweja and produced by Pammi Baweja under the banner Baweja Movies, narrates the sacrifices of sons of 10th Sikh guru Guru Gobind Singh—Sahibzada Ajit Singh, Jujhar Singh, Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh.

The movie was based on book “Two States” written by Chetan Bhagat. This movie fairly depicted the culture of both the states.
